One of my favorite things about princess mononoke was that it didn't have a clear villain. Every character had their own reasons for doing things and each was understandable. Lady Eboshi Can be seen as a villain because she is destroying the forest and wants to help kill the Deer God. However the Iron Works that she runs is fair to its workers and she even helps women escape lives of prostitution. The Boars only want to kill the humans because that destroyed their forest and killed their brethren. The man who wanted to kill the Deer god is the closest thing to a villain the story gets. But because we she him earlier in the movie being nice its hard to hate him.
The film also does a good job of being an environmental film without all of the pretentiousness of being an environmental film. Most of the time when it comes to environmental films they are about man vs nature and how humans are horrible creatures that are destroying the world. This film focused more on the option of working together and living with nature. It wasn't a one or the other kind of thing. The movie wanted to show hat there was a possibility that humans and nature could live together.
