Princess Mononoke: Favorite Moments

Hello once again! I am your lovely host, Greg, and we are going to analyze one of my favorite films of all time: Princess Mononoke!

In this post, I really want to look at the crazy good animation of the arrows that were shot and also the film's great storytelling. But first the arrow animation:

The tenacity of the speed of the arrows being shot by Ashitaka"s "cursed" arm to me was overall beautiful. The speed change from riding an elk to shooting extremely deadly quick cursed arrows was overall amazing to me. Especially that this was the most intense scene that we had seen so far in the film. Yes there was Nago, the demon turned boar, and the action sequences were great, but this was the first human on human violence we'd seen with our main protagonist, and he utterly destroys them with a couple of arrows. Yes we already feel sympathy for him for the curse, but good lord, killing his opponents with arrows!?!?!? (yes I know he was cursed, and I know it was his arm doing that instead of him, just thought it would be curious to point out the differences between usual Western films)

Going back to the animation, the shot selection worked well. Yes it goes under the simple beginning of action, middle of action, result of action, but it is this simplicity that makes it work well. The timing adds a great change from the previous arrow shots by Ashitaka. With the idea of the animation going very well with the story, I think this film provided that very well. The prime example that I can think of this is the scenes with the Deer God's Forest. The beautiful, serene, natural island with gorgeous plants paired with the idea that island is scared and "forbidden" adds such a powerful presence even without the Deer God being there.
