If you liked the movie even a little bit, take my advice and read the manga. Its only 6 volumes and goes much more in depth of many thing that happen in the movie. Any questions that you had while watching the movie are answered in the manga.
The movie did a fantastic job at condensing a 6 book series into one 2 hour movie. Although many things that aren't as important get glanced over the most important parts of the plot are included. For example in the movie we are introduced to Neo-Tokyo as it is already in the middle of a huge revolt and massive protests, the manga eases the reader into the revolution much slower. We also learn the importance of thepills in the manga and the relationship between kei and Kaneda. The movie also makes a bigger deal of humanizing Tetsuo by showing him having a slow decent into madness and giving him many more scenes where he is with the rest of the biker gang. The manga instead almost immediately gives Tetsuo his powers and has him become a cruel remorseless murder. The movie probably made his change to make the audience connect and care a bit more about Tetsuo and his plight. Other differences that the movie has to the manga is some characters rolls. However they are always loyal to the characters personalities and archs. I thought the movie was great and did a fantastic job synthesizing a 6 volume series into one movie.
