Mononokehime

MONONOKEHIME

In 1994, Miyasaki-san published an illustrated book titled Mononokehime or Princess Mononoke. It was an adaptation on the old European folk tale of Beauty and the Beast. "It was told from the perspective of a young girl and she is married off to a mononoke or vengeful specter, and then tries to free her father from evil spirits".  The book was a collection of "image boards" that Miyasaki-san did for a presentation in 1980. The film project finally got off the ground, and the book was then published in anticipation of the film.
These image boards were watercolors. Miyasaki mentioned in an interview in 1994 that:
"I create them to show the production staff what sort of setting I want the story to have. Of course, I also paint them because I need to know, too. Once we know what we want, there isn't much need for them, so as we go forward in the production and things become clearer, I tend to make fewer and fewer image boards."
