Street of Crocodiles - Confusing and Powerful

As pretty much everyone else has already said, Street of Crocodiles was a very unique film with many deep subliminal messages that went over our heads.  However, I was still amazed by this films ability to strongly convey emotion.  More specifically, the sense of repulsion, intrigue and danger that almost every scene seemed to create.  An example of this which we have already seen is the pocket watch that is filled with flesh.  The grotesque feeling within this scene is really emphasized by the screws drilling through this watch.

Another scene which left me with strong impressions was the scene where the main character’s head was removed and filled with cotton, or a similar material.  The creatures who actually do this convey no emotion themselves, adding the mysterious and dangerous nature of the scene’s events.  Additionally, the way the cotton flows out of the head leaves me with the impression that the person inside is being removed from his head because the eyes and mouth, which are the main windows into a person’s individuality, are being blocked and obscured.

In my opinion, the key elements in these scenes are the combined use of events, setting, items (both human and inhuman), color contrast, and the lack of emotion.  The examples above are just a couple of scenes in a film chalk-full of powerful imagery, which illuminate the film’s ability to manipulate the audience’s emotions.  It is the combination of all these scenes that makes me want to re-watch the film again and again in order to fully understand its intriguing message.
